oye mi cielo

Manza como paloma is a widely used expression in Dominican culture. The phrase, which translates to "calm like a dove," is not used as an adjective- rather, a gentle command. Life moves slowly on the island, revealing a calming beauty in its rhythmic hum.

In 2005, I traveled to the Dominican Republic to visit friends living in Villa Sonador, a small village in the central Valle del Cibao. Afterwards, I continued on to the island's northern coast to explore the sleepy fishing villages of the Samana Peninsula. These images illustrate both sides of my experience during those six weeks. The series is titled in memory of an endearing old man I encountered in the coastal village of Las Terrenas. When walking on the beach each day, he would call out to me: "Oye, mi cielo..."

In English, this translates to "Listen, my sky..."
