It was by chance that I was placed with a refugee resettlement agency in Syracuse for a year-long volunteer program, moving from the west coast to coordinate a program for youth arriving from Bosnia, Kosovo and Cuba. Likewise, it was by chance that their families would be resettled in Syracuse for their first experience of the States. We set up homes and apartments for them on the Northside, trying to create a sense of home with limited means in transitional spaces. I spent many afternoons driving a van around the neighborhood with the kids, discovering the city with their serenades of pop songs in broken but rapidly improving English. One episode of James Joyce’s Ulysses, named for these immortals, recontextualizes Odysseus’ battle in the form of a philosophical debate in the National Library. 2017. This series of cyanotypes, titled The Devil and The Deep Sea, was created with a cameraless photographic printing process on site at Mathew Gallery, built around the physical structure of the gallery’s fire escape. The reconfigured lines of the fire escape and the cyan-blue color of the prints both reference navigation and the sea, also hinting at the exercise of mind mapping in discerning what and how we pamphletEdition: 100 zines7 × 5.5", 42 Pages Protanopia investigates color blindness—the decreased ability to see color or differences in color—in literal and metaphorical terms. Visual diagrams, photographs, and text are interwoven in a conversation about how we process space and assign meaning. Recognized as the most common form of color blindness, protanopia is a red-green color deficiency caused by an inherited trait most often found in males. It is typically diagnosed using a series of color perception diagrams known as the Ishihara test. Inspired by experience with the diagrams coupled with hazy memories of my&nbsp;own colorblind&nbsp;father, Protanopia is a layered exploration of space, color and ways of seeing. The book combines risograph-printed photographs taken on New York City streets and classic Ishihara test patterns, juxtaposed with my serendipitous correspondence with a neighbor. The photographs, taken in the blocks surrounding a small post office box on Canal Street, reference the origin of The Landing Project— an ongoing work inspired by the physical dimensions of my first New York address. Walk from Santa Fe to El Santuario de Chimayó, a holy site located 25 miles north of the city. Every year, tens of thousands make a walking pilgrimage to the site centered around Good Friday, the moveable feast just before Easter. The chapel is also known for a well of holy dirt located on site, recognized for its healing properties. This walk marked the beginning of the Good Friday series, exploring different routes, rituals and means of tracking distance on the same occasion every year.
